SIC Boss Sacked
The Managing Director of SIC Insurance Company Limited, Doris Awo Nkani, has been sacked, the company has said.
The dismissal of Mrs. Nkani, who was on interdiction and had been advised by the Board of Directors to take part of her accumulated annual leave effective January 26, 2015, follows reports of corporate and financial mismanagement in SIC.
Mrs. Nkani has thus paid the price for overseeing two major scandals and embezzlement which have greatly dented the image and financial status of SIC, a publicly traded company on the Ghana Stock Exchange.
First is an allegation of misappropriation of funds that got the Deputy Managing Director, Finance and Administration, Musa Abdulai, interdicted; and the second is an issue relating to a credit guarantee bond transaction that has cost the company financial loss running into millions of cedis.
A statement issued by the company said Kwei Mensah Ashidam, Deputy Managing Director (Technical), has been asked to act as Managing Director.
The dismissal of Mrs. Nkani, the first woman MD of SIC, has paved the way for the company to initiate a suit against the embattled managing director, which when successful could deny the ex-MD any entitlement.
The board of SIC is understood to be considering taking legal action and pressing fraud charges against Mrs. Nkani for ignoring directives imploring her not to issue insurance guarantees for loans.
Currently, a credit guarantee product -- overseen and underwritten by Mrs. Nkani that has now gone bad -- has resulted in SIC being directed by a court to pay about GHȼ138million to Ivory Finance Company as the insured – ITAL -- defaulted in its payments to the creditor.
Mrs. Doris Nkani, a lawyer, Chartered Insurer and fellow of the Insurance Institute of Ghana (IIG), has held several top positions in the insurance industry. Prior to her appointment as Deputy Managing Director (Technical) at SIC Insurance she was the Managing Director of Phoenix Insurance Company Limited, where she helped to reposition the company.
She has also served in the past as head of the following departments at SIC Insurance: Underwriting; Claims; Legal; and Marketing. Mrs. Nkani was also the Tema Area Manager and had oversight responsibility of Tema, Koforidua, Aflao and the Ho branch offices.
She is the President of the Bureau of Guarantors of the Inter State Road Transport (ISRT) Association of ECOWAS; a West African sub-regional association that focuses on deepening traffic flow along the interstate corridors of the ECOWAS region.
Mrs. Nkani is an Executive Council member of the West African Insurance Companies Association (WAICA) and a member of the Governing Council of West Africa Insurance Association. She serves on the Management Board of SIC Life, Novotel and the Superannuation Management Committee of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission.
She holds an LLB (Hons) from the University of Ghana, Legon, and a BL from the Ghana Law School. She is a member of the Chartered Institute of Insurance, London, and the Chartered Institute of Marketing, Ghana.

Elikem, Pokello still madly in love
Controversial celebrity lovebirds, Elikem Kumordzie and Pokello Nare, are at it again, months after reports that their relationship had hit the rocks.
NEWS-ONE cameras caught the two lovebirds last Friday evening when they stepped out in style, holding each other’s hands and taking selfies in public while doing what lovers do.
It was the first time Eli and Pokello were seen in public after reports of their break-up late last year. It would be recalled that late November 2014, reports went viral that they had broken up.
Elikem Kumordzie was widely reported to have confirmed on his Twitter account that he had a four-year sexual relationship with the wife of celebrated footballer Nii Odartey Lamptey.
Just when the news was spreading, another alarming comment appeared on the Twitter page of Elikem’s lover, Pokello: “Can some1 ask Gloria Lamptey where she was when Elikem proposed? +233 23 323 3871 stop calling and txtn my fone.46yrs old r u not ashamed?”
Elikem, in a response to the growing media reports, gave a rather confusing explanation of how the tweets got on his wall and said he had never confirmed to have had a sexual relationship with the wife of the Ghanaian footballer.
Elikem’s response suggested that his lover Pokello was behind the tweets and that she was doing that to suit her interests.
He continued with another tweet : “1. who opened my account while I was in the BBA house? 2. Therefore who has my passwords? Q and A.”
Though Elikem wanted the public to believe his account was hacked, he fell short of giving details and seemed to have taken control of the same account, from where he threw jabs at a section of the media who broke the story based on the alarming tweets on his wall.
Surprisingly, all the ‘revealing’ tweets on Elikem’s wall were deleted and the ones on Pokello’s wall were also deleted.
The two, however, were seen together last Friday when they attended the premiere of 30 Days In Atlanta at the Silverbird Cinemas in Accra, and their body language was an obvious signal to those who care that their love is still waxing strong.
Elikem, who represented Ghana at the 2013 edition of Big Brother Africa, surprised Ghanaians, Africans and perhaps the world when he officially proposed marriage to Pokello on live TV during the 15th edition of Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) in Accra.
They watched the new movie together and spent a little time to grant a photo shooting opportunity to their fans.
Meanwhile Friday’s premiere of 30 Days In Atlanta attracted overwhelming numbers.
Among industry personalities at the event were Ramsey Nouah, Lydia Forson, Desmond Elliot, AY, Juliet Ibrahim, Fred Nuamah, Chichi Neblett and others.

24-Hour 'dumsor'; woes of Ghanaians intensifies
Under the new schedule, customers are expected to experience 24 hours power outage (lights off) popularly called dumsor in the local parlance; and have power restored for the next 12 hours.
It is the first time in the country’s history that the people have to experience power outage for as long a period as 24 hours and also the longest period of load shedding – since May 2012 to date.
President John Mahama had pledged ahead of the 2012 elections that his administration would resolve the dumsor problem by 2013, but three years down the lane, the power crisis is still with the country, collapsing industries and small scale businesses.
“The power crisis will be a thing of the past by the end of 2013,” Mr. Mahama said at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Presidential debate prior to the 2012 general elections.
Some of the effects of the power crisis are that Ghanaians have to battle with increased cases of night marauders (armed robbers) and school children are having difficulties in doing their homework.
Students are running to where they can get electricity to study and do their assignments, risking being attacked by miscreants.
No Timetable The situation is so unpredictable that Public Relations Manager for ECG, William Boating, says Ghanaians should not expect a regular timetable for the load shedding since it could not be followed holistically due to shortfalls.
Mr. Boating, who spoke on Accra-based Oman FM last week, said a quantum of generation was needed for the drawing of a timetable for the country.
“As it is now,” Mr Boateng indicated, “the deficit is so high that that there is no specific quantum to draw the timetable for the entire country.”
Upcoming Demo Meanwhile, a group of Ghanaians who go under the name ‘Concerned Ghanaians,’ are planning to stage a massive demonstration on Independence Day, Friday, March 6, 2015 against the erratic electricity supply.
The intended demonstration, which is set to take place in the capital city, Accra, has already started gaining momentum with dumsor-branded T-shirts already out. Some have started placing orders for the T-shirts which have ‘dumsor’ boldly inscribed in front.
Organizers of the demonstration have therefore urged all Ghanaians to forget their political colours and join in the march since the energy crisis affects members of both the governing and the opposition parties.
“Sitting on the fence is not an option.Join the march. Let us show that we love our country. Let us show that we care,” the group posted on the Facebook page whiles urging all patriotic citizens to stand up and be counted.
Meanwhile, pressure group OccupyGhana has thrown its weight behind the Concerned Ghanaians.
Other pressure groups are said to have also expressed interest in joining the demonstration, urging all Ghanaians to help save the country.

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon sued by former nanny
The Hero star and her now estranged husband Nick Cannon have been named in a lawsuit filed in Manhattan federal court, with Simonette Da Costa claiming that
she went to work for the former couple in October and was refused any over time despite allegedly being “at their beck and call” at all hours of the day.
In papers that were filed in court on Wednesday, it read: “As such, she attended to their needs not only at home, but also during Ms. Carey’s travels for her global concerts and appearances."For her services, Da Costa earned between $6,000 and $7,200-a-month for looking after Mariah and Nick’s fraternal twins Moroccan and Monroe.
“Plaintiff was on duty during all hours of each 24 hour day with no entitlement for breaks, for meals, and even for sleep. Indeed, Ms. Carey would often call plaintiff at hours in the middle of the night and demand to be taken to her children or to be updated on the status of her children,” the suit says, according to New York Daily News.
Ms. Carey would not tolerate any delay when she called and plaintiff had to attend to her every demand, spontaneous or otherwise.”
It is claimed that Da Costa was sacked from her job in January 2014 after Mariah telling her off “for expressing too much affection for their children.”
Freedberg also alleges that Carey had been “jealous” of Da Costa’s relationship with the twins.“She was caring for the children too well. (Carey) was worried they were getting confused who the mommy was,” he claimed.
“My understanding is that Ms. Carey didn’t want the children developing any lasting relationship with the women.”
Mariah’s reps have told Mirror Celebs: "We never comment on our client Mariah Carey's private life".But it’s been reported that Da Costa is seeking $100,000 from her former employers in damages.
